Reward yourself

I thought it was going to rain again today, it is my first day off in eight days, so I thought of course rain.  I had planned to tell you a story about the importance of bacon grease, but the rain slipped past me.  Instead of a writing a story, I mowed the yard.  One Important lesson I learned from my father is that when you mow, you fire up the grill.  Knowing that is whats waiting for you at the finish line keeps you going.  Lucky for me the “big box store” ,to which I have a membership, ordered too many spare ribs and had to mark them down.   They may not be baby backs, but I’ll never kick them off the grill!!

Macaroni Salad

Shawn explains how to make his mother-in-law’s macaroni salad with shrimp. Next week we will begin a new series of tips: appetizers for your BBQ.

Happy Memorial Day!

I know it isn’t BBQ, but I only had a brief window between rains to fire up the grill.  Be sure to check out the “Special Events Recipes” for my killer hamburgers.  The drink is something they serve in Charleston SC called “Swamp Water”.  It’s equal parts sweet tea and lemonade and all awesome on a hot day.

National Barbecue Month

May is National Barbecue Month! I for one will be outside every dry moment I can, cooking on the grill.   Tonight I cooked a chicken on the grill and I’ve already eye-balled the contents of the freezer to see whats next.  I see you hiding back pork chops, your days are numbered!  I tried out a pork loin on the grill last week and it turned out AWESOME.  I’ll post the “Wet Rub” so you all can try it out as well.

BBQ fest at the Farmer’s Market

Ok this is my third year going to this festival, and each year the weather has gotten progressively worst. The first year it rained early in the morning and everything was wet on the way in.  The next year it rained until I got there, then it stopped and was a nice.  Today…well it is almost 3pm and it is still raining.  There was a low turn out for cooks as well, mostly restaurants.  I did have smoked trout ribs today though…not bad.  So, now I’m wondering how bad the weather will be next year.

Fried Pickle Chips

Shawn shows us how to make a simple snack that goes well with your favorite BBQ: “Fried Pickle Chips” Use bread & butter or dill pickles, your choice.

Hey!! Is that smoke???

Just saw that the 4th annual BBQ fest at the Farmer’s Market in Asheville NC is set for March 27th and 28th. Nothing against any other fest, but I think this is my favorite. The competitors are lined up around the outside of a large parking lot and every one of them sell sandwiches and stuff!! You can eat your way around the ring, one year I went around twice!  At this competition the judges aren’t the only ones who get to have fun!
